Life and Death within the Hatchery

Wakodahatchee becomes quite the hatchery for many bird species, but not all hatchlings survive. Some fall out of the nest and the gators get them. Others are beaten/starved to death by their nest mates. And others just don't make it for whatever reasons. Here a shot of an immature Wood Stork that didn't make it, while in the background are a thriving Anhinga and what appears to be young egrets. Sad, but part of nature, eh?

I guess it all balances out. The gators might get an occasional nestling but by doing so they keep the bird populations healthy, and their presence deters other predators like raccoons who would climb the trees and take eggs and baby birds.
